Working with residency mentors

They inspired us!

Visiting 350 MHS_FL helped us to identify those that have already experienced  residency for M_Hackers. We call them « Mentors » !

We have decided to focus our time on these places because of their  particular experience with residency makers. Their experiences are very important to keep a space sustainable. Without international M_Hackers it wouldn’t work like this!

We have seen how much energy and creativity they develop to make the residencies of  international Makers possible, including dedicating time to welcoming them, providing places to host them, eqquipement and facilities, and more

These M_Hackerspaces have different purposes and organisational models but their common point is to encourageinternational M_Hackers to bring a new wave of skills, ideas, culture, dynamic … and we will make it possible to document their stories to inspire others tomorrow.

Some exemple

BUIHNO (PT)

In 2015 they created one of the very first rural FabLabs in Portugal, and are now able to offer their residents fast internet connection, fablab access, private accommodation, library, workshops, and unique working environments.

HABIBI.WORK (GR)

Since 2016, hundreds of makers volunteers were welcomed to Habibi.Works, an intercultural maker space and platform for education, empowerment and encountering for refugees and Greek locals in the North of Greece!

VERSTEHBANHOF (GE)

In 2018 the havel: lab e.V. association borned in the train station of Fürstenberg/Havel for the promotion of curiosity of young children and pupils, with a focus on technical and digital education of the present and future.

FABFARM (PT)

Late in 2016 FabFarm started on an old forgotten farm (22 hectars). A place where Lucio’s family + makers in residency really build everything from scratch. Already hundreds of makers came to the farm to help making this dream come true!

Working with existing M_Hackerspaces

Those spaces that have existed for a long time and want to scale up to experiencing residency makers

Working with M_Hackerspace project

Additionally, we collaborate with other initiatives to include the concept of « Makers in residency » from the begining. These projects have started with the physical reconstruction of buildings where they will gather together a local makers community.

They are creating a Makerspace that will be accesible every day, both to local members and international residents. This will create an eclectic community of young volunteers, curious citizens, entrepreneurs, international artists or makers, where they can feel free to use the space and facilities as a part of the community. This includes; local homes to host international makers and workspaces, educational possibilities to combine digital and analogue knowledge, processes and capabilities, created to work in concert with local projects.

The project aspires to highlight the power of the makers movement in the reinvention of, and contribution to, a sustainable future. These will be created in ways that are replicable and open sourced.

Some exemple

CASA BRANCA (PT)

In 2020 started an interesting project in Portugal supported by the founder of Make Praha. He decided to leave Cz.Republic for a new challenge : Creating a makerspace in an abandonned village including 5 houses for hosting Makers in Residency!

Official opening planned for 2022

MANZAT (FR)

2020 begun with a crazy project, in the middle of France, where citizens started building from scratch a rural makerspace in a garage. Right next to it, in an old farm, a future building for residents will allow welcoming up to 6 makers at the same time.

Official opening planned for April 2022

Our ambitions

We are particulary interested to observe in real condition

How M_Hackers in Mobility, Revitalise local territories but also contribute to a cohesive society throughought the European Union, encouraging unity in diversity!

How M_Hackers exchange, Raise awareness of a European learning area, promoting the EU’s broad linguistic diversity and intercultural awareness and  promoting their culture.

How M_Hakers in residency, Encourage active EU citizenship to share their experiences, skills and knowledge. To inspire policy reforms at local & regional level to support the development of knowledge and evidence-based policy as well as recognition of non-formal and informal learning.

Understand the way to replicate

To understand existing residency models used by makerspace and how they can be replicated to create new ones.

To create an usefull documentation

To create open-sourced documentation to help makerspace to take the right decision in the construction of projects including international residencies

And to conclude we aim to write a recommendation concerning a European M_Hackers Mobility Framework. All this work will be done for the benefit of the Makers Movement and public authorities highlighting the strategic importance of including the reception of Makers in Residency from the creation and/or development of a Makerspaces.
