Understanding how Makers Residency impact local community

VULCA team will be particulary interested to follow the developpment of a panel of M_Hackerspaces / Fablabs in rural area that inspired us a lot during our Euopean explorations.

Each relies on the residency of makers as part of the development of the local community and the M_Hackerspace.

2024 – Writting recommendations concerning a European M_Hackers Mobility Framework

All of this work will be done for the benefit of the Makers Movement and public authorities highlighting the strategic importance of including the reception of Makers in Residency from the creation and/or development of a Makerspaces.

Working with SENIORS

First of all, we decide to focus our time on these 4 places because we figured out they put a particular importance on the M_Hacker in Mobility. All their model turn around this concept. Without international M_Hackers it wouldn’t work like this!

We have seen how much energy and creativity they develop to make the stay of international Makers possible including dedicated time to welcome them, place to host them and more.

These 4 M_Hackerspaces have different purpose and organisation model but their common point is to encourage international M_Hackers to come and bring new wave of skills, ideas, culture, dynamic … and we will make our possible to document their story today to inspire others tomorrow.

BUIHNO (PT)

In 2015 they created one of the very first rural FabLabs in Portugal, and are now able to offer their residents fast internet connection, fablab access, private accommodation, library, workshops, and unique working environments.

HABIBI.WORK (GR)

Since 2016, hundreds of makers volunteers were welcomed to Habibi.Works, an intercultural maker space and platform for education, empowerment and encountering for refugees and Greek locals in the North of Greece!

VERSTEHBANHOF (GE)

In 2018 the havel: lab e.V. association borned in the train station of Fürstenberg/Havel for the promotion of curiosity of young children and pupils, with a focus on technical and digital education of the present and future.

FABFARM (PT)

Late in 2016 FabFarm started on an old forgotten farm (22 hectars). A place where Lucio’s family + makers in residency really build everything from scratch. Already hundreds of makers came to the farm to help making this dream come true!

PROOF OF CONCEPT

Additionally, we will collaborate with 2 other initiatives which will include the Makers in residency from the begining and we will consider them as a Proof Of Concept (P.O.C).

These project are based in Manzat, (France) and in Casa Branca (Portugal).  Both plan to renovate first a sevral building to create Makerspace + Accomodation for resident and then devloppe a strategy to attract international M_Hackers to make locally an impact.

These 2 places already started the renovation of the spot and are already open to (non-officially) host volunteers M_Hackers to come and help spot building the Makerspace and Accomodation! (If you want to be in touch with them, feel free to contact us).

CASA BRANCA (PT)

In 2020 started an interesting project in Portugal supported by the founder of Make Praha. He decided to leave Cz.Republic for a new challenge : Creating a makerspace in an abandonned village including 5 houses for hosting Makers in Residency!

Official opening planned for 2021

MANZAT (FR)

2020 begun with a crazy project, in the middle of France, where citizens started building from scratch a rural makerspace in a garage. Right next to it, in an old farm, a future building for residents will allow welcoming up to 6 makers at the same time.

Official opening planned for April 2022
