Experience in Le Funlab (Tours, France)

Welcome in our community-fablab !

Initiated by a bunch of passionate citizens in 2013, the Funlab has been a nomadic project-space before settling in 2016 in MAME, a former printing house and listed monument for its industrial architecture. MAME has been reconverted into a creative hub hosting the Fine Art School of Tours and proposing spaces to entrepreneurs, coworkers, start-ups including an incubator and our fablab (150 m²).

Our organization relies on a community of 150 members, 10 core-members active on a daily basis and a fab-coordinator since july 2017. We now offer a monthly program of activities (machines initiation, arduino users group, Repair Café, topical workshops, events) and start local development projects. We do our best to keep on welcoming a growing number of curious visitors... There’s no routine here, it’s all about making our fablab a better place !

  • Missions :
    • The development of our activities is synonym of a perpetual layout in the lab, we would like to improve the hosting through new layouts to be designed and made during the residency at the lab (organizing and signing the space, making furnitures and storages, reflecting on upcycling and dedicated solutions, etc).
    • We will be happy to put the fablab at your disposal to share your passion of making and knowledge of maker culture : you’ll be invited during the residency to propose an activity open to our community (regular workshops, group discussion, a public event, etc)
  • Period :
    • 4-6 weeks from the 15th june 31st july 2018
  • In and around :
    • Meet-up and visits of local organisations related to digital fabrication, fine arts, crafts, upcycling, social inclusion.
    • Participation to FAB14 international conference in july in Paris (Fabcity Summit) and in Le-Puy-En-Velay (Fab distributed).

City & Around

Tours is located in the Centre region, in the département of Indre-et-Loire, one hour far from Paris with TGV.  It is mainly known as the capital of the châteaux of the Loire Valley. Over the centuries, the city has attracted famous historical figures, including Saint Martin of Tours, Charlemagne, Rabelais, René Descartes and Honoré de Balzac among others.

With 150 000 inhabitants, while the population of the metropolitan area is about 500 000, Tours is dynamic, attractive, and lively as well as intellectual and cultural. The metropolis counts many festivals as well as several institutions such as CCOD Contemporary Art Center, Fine Art Museum, Opera, National Choreographic Center, Le Temps Machine music venue, Polau center for artistic creation and urban planning, Le Petit Faucheux jazz venue, etc.

Standing on the lower reaches of the Loire river, between Paris and the Atlantic Cost, the surrounding district, the province of Touraine is known for its wine. Food is also high on the list of priorities for the people of Tours. The city has become a member of the « Cités de la Gastronomie » network and also belongs to the "Cities of Art and History" association, being the gateway to the châteaux of the Loire Valley.

What does the Fablab finance ?

These funds can be used to cover accommodation, food and transports. For those based out of the European Union, exchanges can be facilitated, Although the same level of funding will not apply. However this matter can be discussed further with the FabLab directly.
